Like a wise soldier once said, Knowing is half the battle. ;)
Now that you know that the summer slide is a real problem, you can focus on what you can do to address it! While summer is certainly a time for children to get some sunshine and relax and recharge for the next school year, not every day can be filled with outdoor adventures and family road trips. During these less adventurous moments, you should think about what you want your children to learn for the summer and make a solid plan that can help you achieve these goals.
For all of the core subjects, there are loads of online platforms and services that can help to provide grade-appropriate content and intelligent tracking tools that can offload a lot of the heavy academic lifting from parents. It's up to the parents to set their children on this path and set some rewards to help give kids the motivating boost they need to sit down and get learning. The rewards don't have to be anything extravagant or fancy; small rewards can just be little things like ice cream, candy, or just getting to choose what restaurant the family eats at, while big rewards can be achieved by reaching major milestones and can include things like play dates at the latest trendy kids place or that video game that they've been asking for for the past few weeks. As parents we like to give our children the things that make them happy, but even using things that you normally would have just given them as a fun parent could be used as rewards too.
As an ELA teacher, the best way to keep their reading and writing skills up to date is to just read books all summer, and you can also set some goals and clear guidelines to keep them motivated all summer. You could place point values on books based on their length and difficulty, and let them trade points for rewards, but don't forget to have Chat GPT make a quiz for your child to take just to make sure that they read for accuracy and not for speed. Finally, you should try to have conversations with your children about what they are reading over dinner and even try to read the books with them, since reading a book with a buddy is an easy way to stay motivated through an especially long book.
If you take the time to find the right learning platform, track and reward their learning progress, and setup a strong system to entice them to read books, you can prevent the summer slide and maybe even make a summer boost happen this summer!
