Irony is a literary device used in literature or film in which there is a contrast between the expected outcome and what actually occurred in the story. To understand how irony is developed, one must understand the three types of irony:
Verbal irony: The meaning is intended to be the exact opposite of what the words actually mean.
Example: Tom finds out that his teacher assigned him another homework packet. He says, "Awesome! Another homework packet!" However, the meaning of Tom's words is actually the opposite. He is not thrilled to receive another homework packet.
Dramatic irony: The audience is aware of something the characters do not.
Example: In Tangled, the audience is aware that Rapunzel is the lost princess of Corona and that Gothel is not her real mother. However, Rapunzel does not discover her true identity until the story approaches the climax.
Situational irony: The outcome of a situation is the opposite of what was expected. In other words, the audience needs to "expect the unexpected."
Example: In Ray Bradbury's short story "The Veldt," George and Lydia try to enforce boundaries on their children, Wendy and Peter, when they discover that they were spending so much time in Africa, a world they created in their virtual nursery. The audience thought the parents would be successful in disciplining their children, however the tables turn when their children use the nursery (technology) to get revenge on their parents so they can have the nursery and the house to themselves. The audience was not prepared for this unexpected ending and becomes a shock for the readers.
What types of irony can you come up with that you have read from a story or from a film you watched?
Satire can be seen in literature in all forms despite the Zeitgeist, cultural milieu, political setting, demographics, or fads, according to social and hard-to-prove traditionists. I recently heard Joyce Carol Oates, author of The Hand-Maiden's Tale deliver a germinal interview or so-called Proposal about how Democracy is threatened by the recent elected American president. At 85 years old she said that nothing has really changed. We had a fair election. The people voted. The winner won by popular vote. Unlike January 6, 2022, no one conspired to overthrow the election; no one defecated in Nancy Pelosi's office or the Capitol; the police were not over - powered, committed suicide, were peppered was quiet because the militia did not hang up signs or chant traitorous remarks, nor barge in to hall carrying confederate flags, and no one laid down bombs, and no one built gallows for Mike Spence. All was quiet on the western front. Joyce said it was show business tat prevailed.,
