Sight Words vs Phonics Lessons Which Method is Better?

Sight words are considered easier for children to learn because they provide meaning and context, but phonics is considered better for teaching children to sound out sight words. Phonics is better at teaching kids to read. Kids who learn with sight words lists alone have a hard time decoding new words and struggle with more difficult reading materials.

Reading sight words and phonics lessons are two different techniques, both important for reading acquisition. They should both be taught, with emphasis on the student’s strengths. The big advantage of phonics is that it teaches the student how to use word patterns, and patterns in bigger words are important. The student can recognize them and then blend them into a word. It makes reading faster and more fluid. Sight words, on the other hand, are learned by memorization, for which the student has to have a good visual memory, and not all do. Students who struggle with sight words have difficulty remembering the words and letters. Since sight words are not decodable, it makes it difficult for them to identify those words. A side note. There is a difference between frequently used words (some of which can be decodable) and sight words, which aren’t.
