How is ADHD a super power?

ADHD can be seen as a superpower because individuals with ADHD often possess unique abilities that can enhance their learning and productivity in certain contexts. People with ADHD typically exhibit high levels of creativity, the ability to think outside the box, and hyperfocus on tasks that interest them. This intense focus can lead to remarkable achievements in areas they are passionate about. Additionally, their impulsivity can drive them to take risks and explore new ideas, fostering innovation and problem-solving. These traits give ADHD learners an edge by enabling them to approach challenges with a fresh perspective, quickly adapt to changing environments, and generate novel solutions that others might overlook.

Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder is a truly misnamed condition. In fact not all of ADHD symptoms would even qualify as a condition, rather, it is just a different neurotype. While I am not discounting the disabling parts of ADHD (as someone with ADHD do I know how hard it can be), I do want to say that many of our struggles are caused by the world not being accommodating enough. Aside from the executive functioning difficulties which is what I believe makes it a disorder, ADHD learners can have any type of intelligence. Many of us are gifted, but we are missed because the disability overshadows our giftedness. The bottom line is that we just learn and interact with the world differently. It is up to the rest of the world to allow us to learn and interact the way our brains are wired. As an educator, I make a point to do this for all neurodivergencies not just ADHD.

ADHD can be a super power because the ADHD brain has the ability to hyperfocus when correctly influenced. If a student enjoys Minecraft, but is struggling in math, activating that enjoyment of Minecraft as a vehicle to teach math exponentially increases the student's learning abilities. Making things matter to a student, and making relevant connections is imperative.
