Everybody has their own story, but maybe I can help you imagine up the situation.
--The protagonist finds him/herself in trouble that leaves him perilously close to death.
--Getting out of it leaves him/her feeling physically haggard and emotionally demoralized. The protagonist's friend(s) notice his/her growing reticence from the ordeal. How tautly the protagonist walks is further evidence on how s/he feels. They find this rather galling.
--A friend saunters over to the protagonist and can relate a story with some semblance to the protagonist's.
--The implacable spirit of the friend perks the protagonist up to realize his/her own indomitable will.
Yes, this is barebones, but like I said, this should be your story. It does not even have to follow the example I gave, but perhaps give you an idea as you flesh your story out.
