Horace becomes increasingly close to Mrs. Penkethman and Ella, and people in town assume he is interested in Ella because she is wealthy. However, Horace is actually genuinely infatuated with Ella, not her money. He idealizes her intelligence, beauty, and personality and is amazed that she admires him in return. Although he knows she thinks more highly of him than he deserves, he chooses not to correct her because he enjoys being admired by her.
