How to Encourage Children to Enjoy Reading:
- Ask Children Directly Why They Don't Enjoy Reading. Listen to the reason(s). A. Some children lack the foundational skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, or reading comprehension) to know how to read, or understand what they are reading. B. When was their vision last checked by an eye doctor? Are they able to clearly see the words on a page? Or, are the letters blurry?
- Take Children To Libraries and Book Stores; provide opportunities that support and promote reading. While visiting these places, select one book you are interested in reading; take time and share with your child why you chose that book. Next, encourage your child to choose a book. Pay attention to what book they choose; when kids are curious about a topic, then they are more interested in reading.
- Model Reading At Home: Provide cozy chairs for children to read. Encourage each family member to read; as children see siblings & adults reading, they will also want to participate.
Best Wishes for Continued Reading,
