Great question! Learning English like a native speaker is different from understanding English. You can understand English at a decent level without having native fluency. Remember that natives spend their early years listening to and learning the language structure even though they are unable to speak, write, or read it. You may have several goals. It may be helpful to make a list of your top 2 or 3 and maybe say what you want to immediately achieve and what may take more time. This process could assist you in properly tracking your progress. There is no one-fits-all rule on how quickly someone learns a language, and after learning the basics, advances to a higher operational level. However, having said that, most learners of a foreign language will never reach the level of a native speaker, and quite frankly, this is not necessary at all. A typical feature of a native speaker is that they have a local accent, speak a local dialect, and can connect to their home country/ region/ town through cultural reference. They can also employ various types of language ranging from slang, to casual, to business, to formal, to jargon. These features of language, along with grammatical accuracy, a vast range of vocabulary, flexible rhetoric, and native fluency and idiomaticity is rarely achieved by learners of a foreign language. Therefore, I recommend that you become aware of your goals and improve your English in small steps to fit your goals. Sometimes, an intermediate level of English or even a low level of English can help you achieve your goals, and improving your language skills over time can be a long-term goal. When you choose an English teacher or course, make sure they test your current level of English, ask why you need English and what level of English you want to/ need to achieve, and what your timeline and budget is. Everyone learns at their own pace! Learning a new language depends almost entirely on the learner. How much do you want to succeed? How quickly do you want to advance? You may be able to learn quite a bit within the typical 6 moths it may take to learn English but, if you aren't serious, it might take a bit longer. Before paying anyone any money, you should stop and take an honest assessment of your learning goals. Why do you want to learn English? Are you looking to begin work at a new job where you need to know English? Do you want to learn English for fun, as a hobby, or perhaps you need it to travel? Are you prepared to spend anywhere between 3 and 5 days learning with a certified English tutor in the class room? And even after you spend this time in class with your tutor, are you engaged in the lessons with your tutor? How much are you speaking during your lessons? Perhaps you cant find the words yet, but trying to speak is important. How much time will you dedicate to completing the homework the tutor assigns you? Your tutor will not force you to complete assignments! Taking lessons to learn English is not a magic pill. You will only learn as much as you are prepared to! So, take an honest assessment of where you stand; be realistic and keep your goals attainable.  But go for it, if you know this is a journey you want to begin! See you in class!
