asked 09/08/22Studying skills
Are you able to reach or guide someone in the way to study anything? This is my granddaughter and she hates to read. I believe the major problem is her ability to stay the course to understand what she is reading. Attention span is negative when reading.
Thank you,
Linda D.

Reading Practice
I would first get her interested in a topic she wants to learn more about that way she will feel more engaged in the "lesson." The current material that is presented to her may be too difficult for her to understand so she will most likely shut down. As a former teacher, I love working with students to help improve their reading and would love to work with your granddaughter. Feel free to message me for details and availability.

Reading and study skills truly do go hand in hand! Teaching a student how to improve comprehension and gain meaning from their reading is greatly improved through using planned strategies before during and after the selected reading. For examole In phase 1: Using the pictures, illustrations and Titles to *predict*what the student believes this reading passage is going to be about. Making it a double guessing game with teacher and student can be fun! And as the next phases of reading are entered teaching tricks such as the very first sentence of a paragraph tells what the rest of the sentences will be about. It also helps if the instructor breaks the reading down into smaller bites or sections.
**Using materials that are naturally exciting and interesring to the student to begin with.. is major important! Teaming up with the teacher and reading simulanteously out loud with the student (echo reading) and then sharing important points made in that paragraph is also a fun way to increase comprehension. I really enjoy all the interactive ways to make reading come alive for students!
PS Yes ! even those really boring and dry reading passages! 😎

I think it is important for her to understand that reading helps her learn about things she is interested in and that books are not the only way to achieve this. For example, she could read articles on the internet, recipes, or graphic novels. My son hates to read, too, and I tried a few things that make reading more enticing to him. I started by giving him a reading interest survey to see what he is interested in and why he dislikes reading. Based on that survey, we began with audiobooks, and now he loves to read graphic novels. I hope this helps a little : )

There is definitely a method to use for keeping on task and studying. It tutor executive functioning skills at a college and this is what students learn when coming to see me. It's not a1-time "reveal the secret" issue. It's understanding several concepts I instill, then consistent follow-up.
