Hi Jade S.,
Suppose you are going to bake a special cake from scratch, but your cupboards are bare. To save time, you are going to the store to buy the ingredients needed, but not overbuy! So, in order NOT to risk damaging your fragile family-heirloom cookbook, you first copy the recipe to a slip of paper, then go to the store and load your cart in the order of your list. Now all you have to do is take the ingredients home, and put them together as specified. Post-baking modifications such as frosting the cake are done in a separate step.
(By the way, is there any protein in the flour for the cake?)
Hope you can draw the parallels, Jade S.
