When children experience difficulty following written directions, it is usually due to poor decoding skills, the visual processing of the written words, limited vocabulary development, and difficulty following the sequence of the directions. To remedy this, the directions should be broken into smaller parts put into numbered steps for the child to decipher and process. The numbering process allows the child to understand more of the directions and begin to recognize the sequence of the written directions.
