I love the answers here so far! Here are three fundamentals I would like to add:
- Enthusiasm. In my experience, elementary students react best to positivity, smiles, and an enthusiastic voice. If you seem like you are having a good time with a lesson, they will have a good time too.
- Speak clearly and repeat yourself. It may seem like overkill sometimes, but younger students really do respond well to repetition. Make sure to speak clearly, especially when some laptops or phones might not pick up audio that well.
- Make it fun! Introduce lessons in ways that will interest your student. Ask your student questions like, "What do you like to do after school?" or "What's your favorite hobby?" Once you get to know their interests, incorporate them into your lessons to make it more personalized and fun. You can also try to turn a subject into a song or rhyme. Show a video if possible. For younger kids, it is much easier to remember rules and vocabulary when there is music and a visual to it.
