NEED HELP! CAN YOU EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT I AM SUPPOSE TO DO OR HOW TO SOLVE THIS QUESTION

The ratio of the number of cats to dogs is 3:5. How many dogs would there be if there were 12 cats? 



what am I doing wrong I did

3+5=8

12/8=1.5

1.5x5+ 7.5 but that's wrong did i miss a step ?
