Phonetically, by sounds. f a s t. Closed syllable for the a is short.
Situationally, theposition of the letters. ((k) sound in the initial or medial position is represented by the letter k if it is followed by an e or i. (k) sound in the initial or medial position is represented by the letter c if followed by an a, o, u, or consonant. Ken, kit, can, cot, cut.
