How Do You Know if Your Child Needs Reading Intervention?

A few signs your child is struggling with reading may be:

An avoidance of reading out loud at home.

Frustration when reading to others.

Inability to read school work he or she brings home.

Reading aloud should sound similar to, or the same as speaking aloud. It should be smooth, fluent and accurate. Students needing extra help developing their reading skills will do well with early intervention.

A student who has confidence in their reading skills will perform well in other areas of learning.

You'll know if your child needs a reading intervention if he or she struggles and or falls below the norm in either fluency, decoding or comprehension.

1. Does your child struggle to retain the letters of the alphabet despite frequent exposure?
2. Does your child struggle with retaining letter/sound correspondence despite frequent exposure?
3. Is your child inconsistent in the things that he/she can recall about letters and sounds?
4. Does your child read fluently but not retain or comprehend what they are reading?
5. Does your child struggle with rhyming?
