Reading is very important. A reading level is a device a teacher uses to understand what a student is able to read so they can have success. It is very common for a student to fall behind in reading. When this happens, it is important for the student to stay patient, focused, and motivated.

A student can improve their reading level by continuing to read outloud and silently. Vocabulary practice is also a key factor. The more words a student knows how to pronounce, the easier it will be for them to read those words.

Practice, practice, practice! The more a student reads, the more familiar words will come for them. Having your children read books at their level will improve their confidence in reading and motivate them to read more difficult books. While this is not universal, studies show that reading at home will support students in school as well. Reading decodable text that focus on certain skills and having ample exposure to high frequency words can improve a students fluency.

Epic is a great online resource for students to be read to or to read silently, there are also many free decodable texts online to choose from!

It's very important to find readings that are on the student's current level, in order to help them progress without making them feel frustrated and ready to give up.

For example, if you struggle with complicated vocabulary, you can search for readings online by looking for texts designed for students who are learning English, for example, a B2-level text has vocabulary that most native speakers would understand, but isn't overly complex. Or you can search by age group, for example, texts for teens.

Additionally, it's important to write down and define new vocabulary words that you encounter, in order to continue growing your knowledge and understanding.

Finally, try to find texts that interest you and are about topics that you actually like. It's hard to get motivated to read if you're bored by the subject matter!

These are all things you can do on your own so that when you are faced with reading for school, it will be much easier for you, even if you don't like the topics.
