San Diegan obsessed with studying the world and its people
- Haiti gained independence from France after fighting the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804)
- In 1825, France demanded payment from their government & their slaveholders because the Haitians took over the slaveholder's land (which makes no logical sense since the French colonized THEIR land) and the Haitians disrupted the French sugar & coffee production
- The bill for Haiti's independence came out to around $21 billion USD in modern currency
- Haiti finally paid off the French in 1947
- This massive payment is one of the main reasons for Haiti's consistent poverty
