Comprehension is confusing, yet the definition of comprehension refers to your ability to understand something, or your actual understanding of something. (merriam-webster.com)
We all learn and understand differently, so once you learn what works for you, it becomes easy. Here are a few strategies that may work:
- ANNOTATE: it is ok to write all over the pages and highlight what is important.
- STICKY NOTES: and ask a question or make a statement about a paragraph or passage after your first read. This helps you think about what you read.
- WHAT IS IT TO YOU? make it personal. Make sticky notes like: This reminds me when... or I wonder why.... Go back to the notes after reading to make sure thepassage clicked in your head.
- CHUNK IT ! Break the book, passage, or chapter up before your start reading. Tab the pages and stop at the tab or sticky note. NOW , retell (paraphrase) yourself or a study buddy what you read. If you cant do it, you need to reread.
