Hello there! Picking reading material can be a little tricky, but I have some ideas for you!
- The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. This is a war time novel with more impactful themes than I can even begin to list. It is great for a 10th grader, and I can promise you they will be able to use it again in the future!
- Native Son by Richard Wright. This one is pretty hefty, and may be too advanced for some readers. However, this book is such a wonderful read. It will be difficult to read at times, but is a great intro book to talk about race in America
- The Color Purple by Alice Walker. Again, this book may be advanced. It is an easy read, however, and is a good introduction to intersectionality. I have read this book many times and, every single time I do, I discover more to it.
- The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani. This one can be read in a couple days. It is broken down into letters, and gives a riveting perspective of the Partition of India in 1947. The themes are perfect for 10th grade!
- Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Of course, this is not technically a book, but it is a classic. This play is the perfect introduction to more difficult language, and will display a different form of literature. (Anything from Shakespeare will do)
- The Crucible by Arthur Miller. This one is perfect for high school. Again, it is a play, but its connections to the Salem Witch Trials are extremely interesting. This is also a great one to read out loud as a group!
- Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This book will appeal to the sci-fi, dystopian society lovers. Again, it is an easy read, but the themes and messages are fascinating! It is a favorite!

Any classics are great options at your grade level. A few options would be Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, The Grapes of Wrath, The Great Gatsby, Moby Dick, Of Mice and Men, Animal Farm, The Catcher in the Rye.... Don't shy away from books that challenge your vocabulary. Use it as an opportunity to learn some new words. Study guides are usually free and easy to find using Google and can help as a guide to digest the more difficult titles.
Good luck :)
My recommendations are Anne Frank-The Diary of a Young Girl, A Raisin in the Sun, Lord of the Flies, To Kill a Mockingbird, Tale of two Cities, and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. I hope that this information was helpful.
