Thank you so much this was actually super helpful and gave me some great ideas.
Is your child struggling with reading comprehension? With over 10+ years in experience, this is my forte. I love making reading fun for kids interactive and finding out what their learning style is this way I can match it to them. I will help them understand what they’re reading and be able to actually answer questions and retain information about what ever the subject may be. So let’s learn and keep it fun and make reading comprehension Less nerve-racking!

EXPERIENCED TEACHER WITH FOUR CERTIFICATIONS GETS RESULTS
First, I have student read out loud so I can hear how fluent a reader the student is. Based on that, I can discern whether the issue is stumbling over unfamiliar words or if the student is skipping lines (very common error that impedes comprehension), or if the student is running through stop signs (periods). A quick recall check of Who? Where? When? What? can tell a lot about how well a child comprehends. Once it is clear what the issues are, then I assign reading books that are on the student's level BUT are classical in nature, i.e., there is substance to the book worth analyzing. I teach vocabulary through context and when an unfamiliar word becomes a stumbling block and student cannot figure out its meaning from the text surrounding it, the student makes a vocabulary flashcard which includes parts of speech, the root word within the word, synonyms and antonyms. By third grade, this is a skill that if learned and practice leads up to success on the future SAT verbals.
