Summer Reading for fun and improved comprehension
Hi Louisiana P,
I hope you are doing well today.
So, I see you are wondering what the father wanted.
I would say that the father wanted to control his own destiny and accomplish his tireless goals - despite having to face disappointment time after time. Life has not been kind to him since he had to drop out of university. Yet, he was determined to control his own destiny. He believe in God, He worked a series of jobs where people disappointed him. He knew his accent was thick and he felt the keen prejudice. He suffered; but, he was determined not be defeated.
The victory of selling tons of ice cream at the festival was epic. He and the boys MADE it happen. Along the way he taught his sons and step-sons what it means to work hard, study and to ignore prejudice. He wanted his children to be "Americans." He did not want his children to suffer as he did. The father could not remove the prejudice - but instead - he demonstrated how to nevertheless succeed.
In the end - the father's life's emprise is attained. Ask any dad what that means and be prepared for a long story.
I hope this helps - Lisa D
