Learning a new language has several positive reasons. For one thing, it helps you understand your own first language better as you learn the ins and outs of a second language. Another reason is that knowing a second language helps you connect to more people in the world than just your fellow native speakers. Plus, learning another language brings with it learning the culture of the people who use such a language. For instance, sign language brings with it a knowledge of the culture of the Deaf community. There are idioms in this visual language that when translated literally don't make clear sense in English. Finally, another reason to learn another language is that it can be a lot of fun! Once you have figured out the language to the point where you can think in the language, you can have a great time using it.
