I think indeed how your friend identifies as a writer depends very much on what she writes and where she hopes to publish. But she needs to remember that her legal name will have to be known to a publisher and, should she be so lucky, a literary agent. Dolezal’s situation was very different and very complex. An authentic ethnic background may be more of an asset for getting published than a whitebread American identity.
The main thing your friend needs to figure out is what i is she is driven to share with the world. Then she can figure out how to go about sharing it.
