There is certainly value in reading for enjoyment. If you have subjects you are interested in, and naturally curious about. Or, if you know your favorite type of story (i.e. mystery, thriller, science fiction, etc.) you can choose books based on this, and are more likely to find yourself caught up in either the subject matter or story line.
I would add, that if you have friends who are avid readers, you can ask them for recommendations based on your preferences.
You can also search Amazon or Goodreads for recommendations based on your preferences. I often find myself drawn to books due to reviews and recommendations written by people who, like me, are interested in similar topics and thus will be able to help me have a good handle on whether a book will be interesting or not for me.
Further down the road, I would recommend that you challenge yourself to read things outside your comfort zone or preferences, because there you will discover the beauty and wonder of eclectic taste. There are so many good stories and so many interesting things out there to learn and read. Let your curiosity run wild, and wear out your library card in the process!
