I have a BA in Special Education and over 5 years teaching experience
First, let's begin with what is tact in ABA training.
The word Tact comes from contact; which means coming in contact with our surroundings from one of our senses. Tact is a verbal behavior, that is often associated with expressive labels. The speaker will comment about what has been heard, smelled, tasted and visualized.
Examples Using Popcorn
When making popcorn we want to add a tact, when we come into contact with popcorn through our senses.
Tact 1 visual ( seeing popcorn on the counter).
When we have a visual of the popcorn, we repeat I see popcorn.
Now Tact 2 hearing
Attach a tact by repeating, I hear with my ears, the popcorn goes pop, pop, pop in the bag and is loud.
Tack 3 smell
Attach a tack by repeating, I can smell the popcorn and the popcorn smells yummy.
Tack 4 adding touch
We repeat hot, The bag of popcorn is hot andI have to wait for the popcorn to cool off or then the bag will feel too hot.
Tack 5 Taste
I put the popcorn in my mouth and the popcorn tastes yummy.
The Intraverbal Is also a form of verbal behavior, but in this case the Intraverbal is when the speaker responds to another's verbal behavior. When responding in a verbal stimulus, we are using an intraverbal behavior.
Example;
How was school today?
school was ok!
Responding is a verbal behavior, known as a Intraverbal and is not always verbal. We can answer questions with a quick smile, wink of eye or head movements or even written responses.
Another form of verbal behavior is a mand which consists of an individual requests: such as Cup please.
To answer what is the difference of a mend and a tact ?
A mand and a tact are both forms of verbal behavior applied in the techniques applied in ABA therapy, but they differ in meaning.
A tact is using our senses to label an object. As when we see a dog, we reply dog and point.
Mand is a request. As when we say cup please.
Tact consists of verbal behaviors in which a learner labels. For example, a mand can be thought of as an instance in which a student asks for something (ex. "Drink, please." to request a drink). An example of a tact is when a student sees a dog and says, "Dog."
