"We are all just prisoners here, of our own device"?

It is from the song "Hotel California" by the Eagles.I have a hard time interpreting the meaning of *device* in this context.

Craig T.

What about the song "Unhappy Girl" by the rock group The Doors which was issued more than nine years earlier than HotLCali and perhaps may possess a similar sense to it?: "Unhappy girl / Left all alone / Playing solitaire / Playing warden to your soul / You are locked in a prison / Of your own device / And you can't believe / What it does to me / To see you / Crying".
