Does reading dense and difficult books build up one’s reading skills?

Not necessarily. If a person cannot understand what they read, it is the same as not reading at all. It is always better to practice reading with books that are easy and gradually increase the difficulty from there. Reading more does teach you to read better, but understanding what you read is the most important reading skill.
