First, make sure you are reading at your level. 2nd, make sure you understand the vocabulary words. Once you have understood all the vocabulary, read it once to see if it makes sense (especially since some vocabulary words have multiple meanings). Then, read it another time and visualize as you read (make a movie in your head). Finally, think beyond what you’ve read - make predictions, make conclusions, think about the main idea, make inferences, think about causes and effects (what would happen if...). These are all higher order thinking questions that will help you not only comprehend, but to retain what you’ve read as well.
