Honestly, the attention spans of most people is shorter than we think. As a result, when sentences drag on longer it is easier for a person to lose attention. Even for people with longer attention spans, if you are reading a sentence that drones on and on it is similar to hearing someone talk for a long period of time.

We often get bored or uninterested in longer sentences.
