Which researchers currently are the best in investigating reading and reading comprehension? What are the current theories about reading comprehension?
Current research of reading comprehension concludes that teaching reading must be done through a phonics and whole-word approach in order to see the most growth in reading comprehension. Children who read everyday with an engaged parent are far more likely to be intrinsically motivated readers as they grow, which fosters greater reading and word comprehension. Dr. Timothy Rasinski of Kent State University is a prominent researcher in the field, and his work has furthered the basis for a whole-word "practice makes perfect" approach to reading.
