I have seen the best way to "grasp" onto your reading and learning is to take written notes. This can be done on lined paper in an outline form, as doodles with details written next to the images, or on structured graphic organizers (structured forms that guide your notes).
You could also take notes or voice recordings of questions or "aha" moments you have while reading. Another way to monitor your understanding of the material is to reread the material. When rereading, be sure to note ideas that you did not catch the first time.
Another strategy that I suggest in "grasping" your learning is to ask questions of your instructor and classmates. This will allow you the opportunity to discuss the material and gain understanding of the concepts within.
