One strategy I've found helpful for students of mine who struggle with retention is pausing after each paragraph to summarize what you just read. If you struggle to summarize what you just read, that could be a sign you went too fast and need to go back and reread. You may also want to jot down a note or two about the main idea of the paragraph you've just read. This can be as simple as one short sentence or even just a couple of key words.
This will make reading go slightly slower but will save you time in the long run as you will retain more and also have notes to refer back to if you need to study off the same material later.
