How do you pinpoint themes when you are reading a passage, poem, and/or paragraph?

If you are able to at the time, read the text aloud. This will help you focus on the text word by word. Second, look for anything that is repeated or that you find more than once. Finally, ask yourself, "what is the main takeaway or message this text is trying to convey?" If you can sum the text's message up in a few words, you've nailed it!
