In my opinion, I think that your artifacts should be related to the educational goals that you have created with your students. The artifacts should be specific and directly relevant to your students. If the particular student was focusing on vocabulary and using context clues or decoding strategies to understand the unknown word, then her their artifact should be related to that.
If your student was focusing on inferencing, or annotating (marking up the text), or utilizing particular reading strategies (reading like a scientist, historian, etc) then I would have them upload artifacts that support that reading goal of theirs.
