Many studies have been done regarding the use of scrolling on e-readers verses page turning in paper books. Some brain-based research shows that students who scrolled through PDF files had a more difficult time comprehending and retaining the material than students who could hold a book in their hands and turn the pages. Recently the manufacturers of e-readers like Kindle have acknowledged these studies by changing scrolling to page turning to help readers have some tactile experience like paper book readers have. Since it is estimated that only about 20% of readers prefer to read on e-readers, it makes sense that e-books would try to imitate more of the paper book readers' experience.
