For me, when I was tutoring kids around that age, the most effective ways that I was able to teach reading comprehension was being able to not only try connecting the stories to them but also making it to were they were able to re-read the text to improve their comprehension of the story as well as suggesting that they read aloud which causes them to slow down reading and being able to clearly understand what the text is saying.
