If a reader is attempting to visualize while reading and finds it difficult try breaking the text into smaller chunks.
Go through each line of text and discuss what is happening. Some things to consider—Who are the characters? What are the characters doing? Where does the action take place? After each section of the text is read and discussed, the reader can independently replay the visual, like a movie. Then the reader can replay the movie orally to retell what they have read.
It may help create a visual by having someone model their thinking about the text aloud. For some readers, creating a sketch based on the text is helpful.
I hope this helps.
