How do I distill a paragraph's information into one sentence by looking for main ideas?

Usually the first and last sentence of a paragraph are the most important. They usually contain the most generalized information or the main idea. Most of the middle of the paragraph contains examples, and more detailed information. There are exceptions to this; however, I find it most helpful to start there.
