Reading non-fiction can absolutely help reading comprehension and writing. The more you read, the easier it is to comprehend what you're reading in future instances. Some people prefer non-fiction to fiction because they are typically more straightforward in direction and do not include false or unrealistic things. For example, you wouldn't find dragons in a non-fiction book but could in a fantasy or science fiction book.
My personal recommendation for reading to improve comprehension is whatever your preference is for reading, what you enjoy.
