You could take notes by writing down analyzing the poem as you read it and rewriting the poem, so to speak. Oftentimes, poets will write things in ways that don't explicitly say what they mean by using metaphors or symbolism. Turning these phrases into their intended meanings, or your interpretation of the intended meanings, it can help poems make more sense.
Another strategy is to note various writing techniques present in the poems (repeated letters, rhyming, repetitive sounds, etc.) to better understand the poem and possible hidden meanings.
