If you come across something unfamiliar or complex while reading, whether it is vocabulary, ideas, or anything else, it can be helpful to have a reference on hand to look up the unknown concept. For example, if you were reading a book on medieval knights and come across something regarding terminology or tactic you are unfamiliar with, you could look up in history books or online to find out what is being mentioned.
