I am a doctor in residency training specializing in psychiatry!
It may seem obvious, but the first step is to remove all distractions. It is tempting to listen to background music while reading, but try without and see if your concentration improves. That said, white noise such as in a coffee shop can be helpful for many people! Second, make sure you are reading on the right modality. Some people prefer books/paper, others tolerate phone and computer screens, and still others prefer some reading device like a Kindle. You will find your ability to focus on the text actually depends quite a bit on the display, so try reading on a different device/screen or from a book. Third, stop worrying about how quickly you're reading and how much you're retaining! Remember that you can always go back and read over something again to pick up on further details. The key is to grasp the main idea! One strategy is to skim the chapter outline beforehand, and then begin reading. The key to fast reading is your brain expecting what content will come next, and almost predicting what text will come next automatically.
