Horizontal Gene Transfer?

I understand the different ways bacteria can undergo horizontal gene transfer (transformation, transduction (phages), conjugation (plasmids)). Is there an experimental method to tell how a specific gene got into the host (during evolution)? For example if a gene A got into host X from species Y, is it possible to know how gene A was transmitted?

why dont you tag the viral and plasmid dna using different isotopes/radiolabels by culturing the specimens in the radiolabeled broths. Then grow and exposed host X. From there you can do a DNA isolation and analyze the presence of the type of label transferred: ex . use MS or autoradiography to ID the radiolabel.
