Hi,
There is no absolute answer to how one person can absorb a language and use it effectively and correctly faster than another. I find that when encouraging my students to expand their vocabulary, introducing the word and definition in all its grammatical forms is not enough. You may be able to memorize this, but it is only when you begin to use a word in its own context that it becomes part of your reality.
Try selecting 10 words that you've encountered through any media and read examples of how others have used them on the net. Then try incorporating them into a work or school assignment until they become natural to you. Read even casual novels with a dictionary at your side and keep a diary of new uses for vocabulary. Don't be embarrassed, use them with close American friends with the request that they correct you when your wrong without any animosity. The more you include the multiple meanings of a 'crazy' English language in your everyday, the easier it will be become to select the proper words.
I hope my words have been helpful.
Sincerely,
Laurie G.
