All the APA guideline resources I reviewed agree that you must continually cite your reference sources, even though I agree with your instinct that this convention produces clunky writing sometimes. When in doubt, cite your sources. It's better to sacrifice some flow rather than run into trouble with plagiarism.
It is possible to minimize parenthetical citations, but you will likely have to restructure some of your sentences.
Your three main options are:
1) Author's name in text, date in parenthesis
2) Author's name and date in parenthesis
3) Author's name and date in text
