The literal meaning behind Box Office, is the little box the theater attendant sits in where you buy tickets. Though, it usually refers to the sales happening at theaters based on worldwide or regional, such as US Box Office and Foreign box office. Traditionally, the box office numbers would signify how well the film is doing after its release week by week. Though recently, box office numbers have started to lose its weight due to Covid-19. Due to production companies going straight to streaming, like Disney and HBO, we are seeing profits shift over from the box office to these straight-to-streaming services.
So if you are talking about how much from the box office money, do the people get, the answer would be mostly none. So how production typically works is each film is given a budget for everything. Actors, behind the camera hands, directors, DPs, really everyone is given pay before the film is ready for release. The higher paid people involved in making the films (based on films going to the box office, major films) are directors, actors, and producers. Everyone who is helping like production assistance, editors, etc get paid either by project in one sum or hourly, and its not much compared to the huge number you can see actors/directors/producers make.
