Hi There,
The number of chiasmata is highly variable between cell divisions and organisms . It depends on the chromosomal length as well as the susceptibility of a chromosomal region to recombination. There must be at least one chaismata per chromosome for proper separation of homologous chromosomes during meiosis I.
