Hi! I find the most helpful way to analyze a paragraph from a textbook is to break it down into manageable parts.
First, identify the topic sentence(s). What main idea does paragraph revolve around?
Second, find the supporting details. Which points "flesh out" or support the topic?
Third, find the conclusion/transition. The end of the paragraph should wrap up the topic and provide a transition to another idea/paragraph.
Here is an example:
One neurological disorder than impacts cognitive function is Huntington’s disease. This disease affects the basal ganglia, causing individuals with this disorder to exhibit symptoms such as mood and personality changes, involuntary movements, and inhibited judgement. Individuals with Huntington’s disease may also experience difficulty swallowing, which leads to notable weight loss. There is no cure for this disease, but treatments include medication to help control involuntary movements, psychopharmaceuticals, physical therapy, and often occupational therapy and speech therapy.
Topic: Huntington's disease
Supporting details:
-disease affects basal ganglia
-symptoms of HD: mood and personality changes, involuntary movements, inhibited judgement, difficulty swallowing, weight loss
-no cure
Conclusion/transition: Treatment options include medication, PT, OT, speech therapy
I hope this helps!
