Is it sufficient to just have a student "practice" reading silently? Does it help to simply correct the student when he/she misreads a word, telling them the correct word?

When reading, if a word is mispronounced it is best to sound out the word together, making sure that the word is said correctly and the reader knows why. Simply correcting the mistake does not help the reader to be able to read the word on their own the next time they come across it.

To answer the first part of your question about reading silently....the intent is to read AND comprehend what she reads. Some sub-vocalize even while they read silently, as if they were reading outloud. This slows down their comprehension because they are not reading the thought, but individual words.

Would you please say more about the second part of your question? Do you mean while they are reading outloud, they mis-pronounce a word?
