This can be both valuable and hindering depending on the purpose of why you would be taking a year off. I taught a student that needed a year off for health purposes and was determined to get back into school once the dust settled. There are sometime emotional or financial obstacles that also stand in the way of school. However, if the reason is just because the student is tired of school or wants a break, I think that they need to keep going and stay motivated. The main thing to figure out when choosing the next step after high school is figuring out if the classroom setting is even right for you. Maybe think about a trade or certification instead of a degree that you may not even end up using. Weigh the pros and cons of everything you enjoy in life and everything you may dislike and decide the right path.
